I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It’s cloud illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all
–Joni Mitchell
What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good folk song. And while Joni may not have known much about clouds, Novell certainly does. And working with Intel, we’re changing the way people look at clouds—from the inside out.
In case you haven’t heard, Novell is playing a key role in the Intel Cloud Builders program. This is a cross-industry initiative that’s aimed at making it easier to design, deploy and manage cloud infrastructures that improve information security and computing resource efficiency.
Intel is, of course, focused on developing smarter hardware to power cloud computing. Novell is concentrating on helping companies first deploy internal clouds and then move to public clouds using the company’s WorkloadIQ products to simplify and secure the process.
Out of this Novell-Intel collaboration, a reference architecture for internal clouds has emerged. While only a starting point, this basic hardware blueprint specifies Intel Xeon processor 5600 series-based servers running a mix of VMware ESX and Xen hypervisors with Novell Cloud Manager. And me being me, that’s where I start to get emotionally invested.
A primary component of the Novell WorkloadIQ solution, Novell Cloud Manager provides a simple yet powerful interface for configuring and managing internal private clouds. It lets IT administrators easily create and deploy workloads into their virtual environments based on a service catalog of predefined workload templates. It also allows enterprise IT organizations to support multi-tenancy, enabling the infrastructure to securely host VMs belonging to different internal IT customers while isolating storage and network components.
The reference architecture featuring Novell Cloud Manager will help shorten the learning curve for IT organizations that want to build a private cloud. It will also help them realize the revenue potential of their existing data center infrastructures by offering cloud computing services to their internal users.
You can read more about the Intel Cloud Builders program featuring Novell Cloud Manager by viewing the Intel Cloud Builder Guide.
There’s also a joint Novell-Intel seminar you can view. In it, you’ll learn how you can build and manage a secure and compliant private cloud—on the virtual infrastructure you already have today. You’ll hear how Novell Cloud Manager combines self-service, cost visibility and policy-based automation to deliver IT services faster, control virtual sprawl, and reduce risk and costs. Check it out here.
Since we’ve taken a look at clouds from both sides now and identified a proven reference architecture, there’s no reason your IT organization needs to suffer any growing pains while implementing your own private cloud solution or migrating to a public cloud.
