Okay, maybe my headline is a bit sensational. (Well, thank you. I do try.) But the further we get into this year, the more that my predictions from Top 10 WorkloadIQ Exclusive: My 10 Predictions for 2011 seem to be coming true. If you’re a fan of my blog, you may remember that I wrote CIO turnover would increase as companies looked for greater business value from their IT departments.
The other day I ran across quite an intriguing article on Forbes.com. The article, entitled Why the CIO Role Is Under Fire, illustrates the increasing pressure on CIOs to deliver greater value to their businesses—or else. According to the article, there are several factors threatening the authority, credibility and very role of the CIO in the enterprise today. These include the consumerization of technology, outmoded IT environments and a lack of IT flexibility to do much about it.
Where CIOs once seemed to call all shots, it now seems that many of them have a target painted on their backside. But don’t count the poor ol’ CIO out just yet. (Hope does spring eternal, doesn’t it?)
Intelligent workload management (IWM) can provide CIOs the next-generation viewpoint they need to survive—and perhaps even thrive. Of course, it’s no secret that I’m partial to Novell’s own WorkloadIQ approach when it comes to IWM. Some of the ways that WorkloadIQ can help CIOs improve their current situation include:
- Through more flexible IT infrastructures, CIOs can increase the pace of change in their departments and deliver the agility business units are looking for
- By taking a more iterative and collaborative approach to business and technology planning, CIOs can ensure support for new business models and disruptive technologies as they come on the scene
- Creating more nimble IT organizations and infrastructures that leverage virtualization, cloud computing and intelligent workloads; CIOs can help ensure their organizations’ long-term viability
- By recasting IT departments as business enablers, they can highlight the impact and value they bring to the business units they support
- Through embracing the elements of change—both human and technological—CIOs can ensure control and security across all their computing environments
- Shifting capital expense budgets to operating expenses allows CIOs to seize upon innovation
- By leveraging technology and employee talents, CIOs can find their own paths of innovation—and prove their worth
Can adopting an identity-infused approach to intelligent workload management keep CIOs out of the witness protection program, and help them retain their current identities (and jobs)? In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I’m not aware of any CIOs actually entering the Witness Protection Program. (I don’t know of too many CIOs who have wise guys looking to settle scores against them.) However, CIOs do need to pay heed to the changing environment they find themselves in today. Well, that is if they want to keep the title of CIO.
If you’re not currently deploying WorkloadIQ solutions, keep your head down—and it wouldn’t hurt to wear dark glasses and ball cap.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more Playstation 4 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
