One of my favorite quotes is this: “Change is inevitable—except from a vending machine.” Well jokes aside, change is indeed inevitable, and it’s a sure sign of progress.
Novell recently changed the name of one of its very strategic WorkloadIQ products, Novell Business Service Manager, to Novell Operations Center. Since you may not know what Novell Operations Center does, and what it means to intelligent workload management, I thought I’d answer a few questions.
What is Novell Operations Center?
Novell Operations Center (NOC), formerly known as Novell Business Service Manager, helps customers implement an end-to-end view of an IT service to ensure that they are meeting service levels and commitments to the line of business.
What core capabilities does NOC provide?
- - Monitoring performance and availability to build service models.
- - Mapping standard configurations against what’s operationally running. This helps manage business risk and ensure compliance through intelligent change management.
- - Measuring the availability and performance of the business service. SLA reporting is typically a very manual process, requiring 10 man-days per month to compile after-the-fact, somewhat subjective reports. NOC does this in a live, automated, credible fashion.
Who uses NOC?
Three groups within an enterprise benefit from Novell Operations Center:
- - The data center operations group
- - Senior IT management
- - Line-of-business management
In addition, service providers can differentiate their services by providing customers with real-time insights into the performance of the business services they deliver.
Does Novell Operations Center replace my best-of-breed tools?
No. Existing tools typically monitor the performance of specific components within a business service, such as server availability, virtualization, network performance or databases. Novell Operations Center is an integration engine that taps into these existing data sources and applications. It’s the glue that brings everything together and adds value by giving you a business-service-level view that spans all of them, regardless of location.
How is Novell Operations Center different than other tools?

Novell Operations Center is a better name! However, it bring some confusions. For example, we all know Novell provide SuSE Linux and some virtualization solutions now. Can NOC management all SLES servers and all vitual machines? My thinking, it’ll be no.

I found some clarifying content in the Cool Solutions article: IT Silos to Services! Business Service Management (http://www.novell.com/communities/node/11302/it-silos-services-business-service-management) that gave me insight to the benefits and value provided by the newly named Novell Operations Center:
What if…….
- You had a view of the symptoms that something is going awry ahead of an incident
- You averted that incident by taking action to redirect
- You knew not just severity, but also priority of events based upon business rules
- You knew risk of making a change to a component prior to a change
- You knew the business priority of a service and all the supporting components
- You monitored service performance based upon technology availability and value / volume of the business being transacted through the service
Now imagine that all of this is in a single, graphical view – that is Business Service Management (now Novell Operations Center). Managing the technology in alignment with objectives of the business.
These benefits are HUGE from a services and support perspective!
