As to the title of this blog, no, my spellchecker isn’t on the fritz. You see, lately, I’ve been thinking about how crowds think and arrive at answers collectively and how “crowdsourcing” could have a positive impact on cloud computing.
In James Surowiecki’s book The Wisdom of Crowds, he writes about how people in groups have an almost mystical ability to accurately guide opinion and make better decisions than a single person could make. Of course, this theory supposes that the people comprising the groups are wise, well intentioned, motivated and overall a pretty good facsimile of the population at large. The book offers many case studies and anecdotes to support his argument.
My colleague Ian Bruce offers a somewhat different viewpoint on the subject in an interesting blog article of his own. He contrasts the thesis of “the wisdom of crowds” to that of “the madness of the masses,” which states pretty much the opposite—that crowds are nothing more than mindless herds led by extremists, zealots and the marginal.
So what does all of this have to do with cloud computing?
Well, cloud computing is still an evolving mystery. And it’s one that’s not likely to be solved by any single company. Sure, VMware, Microsoft and even Novell have incredible resources at their disposal. But this issue is bigger than all of those resources combined. Something more is needed to crack this case.
I think we solve this by crowdsourcing projects. (Here, I’m thinking of all those people who haunt social media and the Web.) I’ve been thinking that cloud computing needs an online forum. A place where intelligent people with similar goals can come together, discuss, collaborate and eventually solve problems associated with cloud computing.
For example, on this forum, they could discuss problems they might be having in the data center with a particular topic. They could describe the sort of tools and solutions they might need to solve these problems. And they could talk about features they would like innovated or changed in existing products. As you know, the more we hear about customer needs, the better the outcomes.
You see, if you can ensure that your crowd comprises those who are indeed wise, well intentioned and motivated, then you have a good chance that they represent the larger population concerned. And then you have the wisdom of the crowd working for you.
